November 27, 2009 - Forty-two and one-half tables competed in November's second Unit Wide Championship. We dropped a few tables this time around. I blame the turkey.  Six of the fourteen overall awards went to AZ BridgeWorks players. Congratulations to Estie Schotz and Ceci Markovits for their third place in the 'A' strata. A special ooo-la-la goes to Elizabeth Ambler and Farol Sax for their first place in the 'C' strata.

November 13, 2009 - Fifty-eight and one-half tables competed in November's first Unit Wide Championship. Eight of the fifteen overall awards went to AZ BridgeWorks players. Kudos to Linda Mitchell and Barbara Flanagan for their first overall. Robert Johnson and Jo Levy took the 'B' strata.

November 12, 2009 - Seven tables of novices and mentors participated in this winter's first Novice/Mentor pair game. First overall went to Jack Gilburne and Leon Lowe. Sandra Labute and Honey Klein took first North/South. Watch our Novice/Mentor page for upcoming games.

October 31, 2009 - Kathy Schenk placed first overall today playing with her husband, Marvin. That's her fifth win in October and that makes her our eighteenth cup winner since we began this award in late 2004. Any player placing first overall five times in a calendar month wins a cup with their name on it. Congratulations Kathy! See our other Cup Winners.

October 29, 2009 - Twenty-two teams competed in our "Eight is Enough" team game. Food arrived from all over the valley and everyone had a great time. Winning first in the 'A' strata was the team captained by Kathy Schenk and including Allen Silberman, Harvey Epstein and Garrison Singer. They pulled out the event when matched against the Marvin Schenk team on the last round. Ken Barbour's team including Vivienne Cummings, Maggie Pratt and Avril Sher handily captured the 'B' strata. And, last and greatest, the 'C' strata went to the team of Susan Kay Schultz, Andree Schaeffer, Sandra Labute and Patricia Shumaker. Thanks to all who attended and a special hat tip to the A flight players contributing their time.

October 21, 2009 - Almost 59 tables competed in the second Unit Wide Championship for October. Six of the seventeen overall awards went to AZ BridgeWorks players. An amazing 'wow-wee' goes to Ken Klein and Kathy Schenk. Their 71.69% game was enough to guarantee first overall and a whopping 9.78 masterpoints. Allen Silberman and Harvey Epstein posted a remarkable 66% game for third overall in A and first in the B strata.

October 11, 2009 - Barb Bunnell, vice president of Unit 354, has just been named to the national ACBL Goodwill Committee. The prestigious Goodwill Panel aims to promote our game and foster play at clubs and tournaments. country. Her appointment to the committee was by National ACBL President Jerry Fleming, of Los Alamos, N.M. during the District 17 board meeting in Ruidoso, N.M. Fleming also announced that he has named Chris and Judy McNaughton as members of the national ACBL Charity Committee in recognition of their work for the recent Horn O Plenty Food Drive which netted a record $4,300 for the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance of Phoenix.

October 6, 2009 - Almost 40 tables competed in the first Unit Wide Championship for October. Ten of the sixteen overall awards went to AZ BridgeWorks players. A special yee-haw goes to Mary Ann Schumann and Rose Harris who swiped first overall and first in the B strata.
On a related note, after a great deal of assistance from the ACBL and our Unit Coordinator, Angie Ulrey, we have come up with a system that should result in quicker posting or your overall awards at the ACBL. Immediately following the second Unit Wide Championship, we will be filing a report with the ACBL for both games. That report should then be posted to your masterpoint awards within just a few days. We will still be posting the overalls here and at your participating clubs.

October 1, 2009 - The ACBL has designated October as Club Appreciation month. We are allowed Club Appreciation games for each session during the month. You'll notice a slew of Club Appreciation games this month courtesy of the ACBL.

September 29, 2009 - We have noticed that some of our players took an article in the Shuffle, Deal and Play to heart. The author suggested using the STOP card as a tool to warn bickering or rude opponents of a potential Zero Tolerance violation. It's important to note that the STOP card is a prelude to a bid. It conveys information to everyone at the table. Using the card to warn opponents of a Zero Tolerance violation can lead to unauthorized information being provided. Even if no information is conveyed, your bickering opponents are within their rights to call the director and seek protection on the board. Please do not use the STOP card for this purpose at the club

September 25, 2009 - A half table shy of 50 competed in Unit 354's second Unit Wide Championship for September. Nine of the seventeen overall awards went to AZ BridgeWorks players. A special be-bop-n-hoop-de-doo goes to Mary Beth Volberding and Joan Kralicek. Coming in first overall in A, B and C strats, they were untouchable! Kudos also go to Marianne Spanier and Buddy Marsh, and Elayne Zack and Richard Gitter.

September 17, 2009 - In a generous offer, Chris and Judy McNaughton are offering to match every dollar collected for the Unit 354 Food Drive up to $1,000.00. Unit 354 collects food and donations every year in conjunction the Horn-O-Plenty Sectional October 2 thru 4 at the Doubletree Inn in Scottsdale.
Chris and Judy are this years chairs. In addition, another anonymous donor will contribute an additional $250.00. That's $1,250.00 available in matching funds.

September 11, 2009 - Forty tables competed in Unit 354's first Unit Wide Championship for September. Eight of the fifteen overall awards went to AZ BridgeWorks players. A Special hoop-de-doo goes to Bill Berry and Bruce Delugish for their third place in A and first in B. Way to go boys! Adele Verkamp and Ned Kohler took second in the A strata with an outstanding 67% game. Congratulations to all who played.

September 4, 2009 - Thirty tables competed in what we have dubbed 'The Jim Game.' This session is dedicated to honoring our longtime friend, club director, tournament director, teacher and mentor who we lost last weekend. Phebe Packer provided reminiscences for all of us and brought back memories that will long be cherished. Jim's neice, Susan Sanchez, brought by a box of bridge paraphernalia that we will keep and display at the club. Food was provided by many and a truly memorable event was provided to all of us who remember Jim fondly.
Donations in excess of $1,700.00 were given in his  name to Logan's Playground. Donna Johnson and Kim Corbin won the Upgraded Club Championship garnering 6.67 masterpoints with an outstanding 70.66% game. Our sincere thanks to all who attended, provided food and donated.

August 25, 2009 - We have just learned that Jim Cox passed away sometime Sunday evening. All of us at AZ BridgeWorks are grief stricken. On Friday, September 4 we will host a special Upgraded Club Championship in memory of Jim. We had hoped to have a charity game but the ACBL does not allow them during September. As a result, if you care to make any donation, it will be provided to Logan's Playground in Jim's name.

August 24, 2009 - In an effort to improve the way we seed and stratify the field, beginning Monday, August 24, we will be selling assigned tables. This should help us keep the field balanced and insure that 'A' strata players don't skip each other. If you have comments or any constructive input, please share this information with any of our directors.

August 14, 2009 - Lately, we have been setting the strata for your sessions at 2,000+ for the 'A' strata for most games. The average player's masterpoints have risen in just the last five years. As a result, we will be setting the 'B' for the Tappan top ten at 500-2,000 and the 'A' strata at 2,000+. We think this is a more representative sampling of our field.

August 12, 2009 - Forty two tables competed in Unit 354's Unit Wide Championship today. Five of the sixteen overall awards went to AZ BridgeWorks players. Buddy Marsh and Ron Fischer cleaned up taking first overall with a giant 69.21% game. Kudos also to Monique Green and Michaele Olesen for their second in 'B' placing.
